Where have all the leaves gone?

Defoliated Trees

Driving through Dunolly and Tarnagulla this week we were surprised by the extent of the defoliation of the eucalypts. It was almost as though the trees had been burnt in a hot fire except the trunks and ground layer were intact.

We came across what we think is the culprit when we stopped to look at the Tarnagulla Cemetery. On the fence and gate were the brightly coloured caterpillars of the cup moth, at various stage of development.
